Most churches meet family crisis with either condemnation or silence, and lay carers who want to help usually have no map for what is actually happening or what they should and should not do. This course trains lay carers to recognize family crisis clearly and respond well across its most common forms: marital conflict and disconnection; betrayal and broken trust after infidelity; domestic violence, including the correction of texts on submission that are misused to justify abuse, and the basics of safety planning; divorce and its aftermath, including grief, telling children, and the church's posture toward divorced members; remarriage and blended families; extended-family strain, generational patterns, and external shocks; and the longer journey of recovery - forgiveness rightly defined, the stages a family actually passes through, and when a situation needs a professional or legal channel rather than a caring layperson alone.
Nine chapters (an introduction plus eight content chapters), most ending in a Workshop. Chapter 4's Workshop is a required-completion safety-plan worksheet, since that chapter is the one most likely to matter in an actual emergency.
Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. Where faithful traditions genuinely disagree - on the grounds for divorce and remarriage, and on how authority and submission function in marriage - this course names who holds what rather than choosing for the reader, and states plainly where Catholic and Orthodox teaching differs from much Protestant practice. This is lay training in recognition, presence, and referral, not marriage counseling, trauma therapy, or legal advice, and the course says so plainly wherever that line matters - especially in the domestic-violence chapter, where the course's task is to help a lay carer notice danger and get the right help involved, never to manage it alone.
